Winter always brings it fare share of accidents, some more serious than others.

in Villach a Fatal crash with snow Tractor, with a mounted snow blower, hurled the car of a 24-year-old into oncoming traffic.

A collision with a tractor cost the life of a 24-year-old female car driver in Villach on Monday evening.

An 18-year-old local man turned the tractor, from a side street, onto the main street which the 24-year-old was traveling along. This resulted in a collision with the 24-year-old’s car and a fatal crash.  Her car was thrown into the oncoming traffic lane, where she also collided with the car of a woman travelling in opposite direction.

The 24-year-old was trapped in her vehicle, was rescued by the fire department who cut her from the car and brought to the hospital in Villach. There, however, she unfortunately succumbed to her severe injuries.

According to Statistik Austria, 151 people were killed in road accidents in Austria in the 1st half of 2021, and 17,585 others were injured. The number of road fatalities was thus lower than in any other 1st half of the past 60 years.

Even in the pandemic year 2020, the number was slightly higher (1st half 2020: 152 fatalities, 1st half 2019: 196 fatalities). In contrast, the number of cyclists killed in accidents peaked at just over 4,000.

In the UK as a comparison the figures were higher, but the UK has 8 times the population.

  • there were 1,390 reported road deaths, a decrease of 11% compared to the year ending June 2020
  • there were 119,850 casualties of all severities, a decrease of 9% compared to the year ending June 2020
  • the reduction in total casualties is greater than the reduction in traffic which decreased by 5% from the year ending June 2020
