Some interesting facts about ski-ing in Austria...

Skiing is one of the most popular sports in Austria and an Austrian with no skiing ambitions is very rare indeed! Austrian professional skiers rank as some of the best in the world.

Many of the ski resorts in the alps are well known and attract tourists from all around the world . Because the Austrian alps already had people living on them, there was no reason to build new skiing resorts. Existing villages simply added skiing to their other forms of tourism, building some of the best ski lifts to service this new found money spinner!

The skiing areas are very organized, offering all sorts of transportation and many valleys connect to each other. There is the opportunity to start skiing in one valley in the morning an end up in a total different one at the end of the day! For example the "Salzburg Sportwelt" at the heart of "amadé", Austria's largest interlinked skiing area, has 5 prime ski resorts featuring a total of 276 ski lifts and an incredible 865 km of superb runs in Salzburger Land and Styria!

Some areas offer so many lifts and pistes, that even after a week you have not seen them all. Another very important fact is that Austria is a snowboarding friendly environment, allowing boarders the use of all lifts and pistes.

Many areas of Austria are host to big international skiing and snowboarding competitions. The nightlife of many resorts is some of the best in Europe!

Ski regions succeed with WLAN

IT experts in charge of providing two of Austria’s biggest ski resorts have said they are satisfied with tourists’ response to the new offer.

Salzburg’s winter sport resort of Amade and the Sölden glacier region, East Tyrol, as well as several other resorts across the country set up free of charge wireless local area network (WLAN) connections at lift stations and information centres.

The organisers masterminding the projects at Amade and Sölden glacier told the Kurier newspaper today (Thurs) that skiers and snowboarders reacted positively to the opportunity. More than 12,000 holidaymakers logged in with their smartphones and notebooks at Amade so far this month, according to the paper’s report.

Holiday industry experts think that services such as the most recent provision with WLAN internet access are developing into a decisive criterion of people when it comes to choosing their holiday destination. They also underline the various positive effects for the holiday regions if tourists send pictures and texts to friends and families on a regular basis this way.

The number of skiing regions but also summer holiday destinations across Austria considering the introduction of such services is allegedly on the rise despite the need to make financial cuts here and there. Analysts think that most areas eyeing up such investments would eventually go for it due to fears of falling behind in competition with towns and cities which opted for free WLAN services.

Now winter sport regions are working on the introduction of WLAN access on ski lifts and cable cars to attract more fans of multimedia technology. Vienna has been an immensely positive aspect of the domestic tourism sector’s performance in recent years as far as overnight stay records are regarded. However, the city is struggling to catch up with industrialised areas abroad when it comes to providing free of charge WLAN in public places.

Two people died on Sunday while skiing in Salzburg.A 70-year-old Pole died on the Aineck, Katschberg, Lungau. The lifeless man had been found by other skiers on the slopes.

Four randomly passing doctors from Germany tried to resuscitate the tourist but to no avail. The team flying in on the rescue helicopter could only confirm the man's death. The police suspect he died of natural causes.

A 53-year-old German died suddenly on Sunday on the slopes in the Pinzgau region. The man was skiing in Saalbach and suddenly collapsed and was found lifeless on the slopes.

Three passers-by and ski rescuers provided first aid. When the ambulance arrived it could only confirm his death.

Ski resorts forced to close as a result of too much snow

Ski resorts forced to remain closed by a lack of snow in December have now been forced to close many runs because of too much snow.

Ski resorts across Austria and Switzerland say they are now struggling to cope after metres of snow combined with high winds and stormy conditions over the past 48 hours left runs blocked or in danger of avalanches.

Changeable temperatures combined with high winds and new snow has put many ski resorts across Tirol, Salzburg and Vorarlberg on high avalanche alert. Temperatures are expected to drop dramatically over the weekend and winds today (Friday) have already reached over 170 kph making conditions even more treacherous.

Avalanche experts are working around the clock to assess the risks and where necessary and possible are carrying out controlled detonations. Rudi Mair, manager of the avalanche action team in Tirol said: "With winds peaking at 170 kph we can safely talk about a hurricane. Heavy new snow, freezing temperatures and the hurricane we are talking about high risk. The avalanche risk across Tirol is high and it will rise.

The high winds in particular are a threat to ski lifts which have been forced to close as the winds from "Hurricane Andrea" are too high - making conditions highly dangerous. The high winds also risk dislodging snow from high peaks.

Herbert Kaufmann form Dornbirn Seilbahn AG - the lift company in Dornbirn, Voarlberg said: "We have around twenty people stuck in the restaurant at the top of the mountain still as we are unable to put the lifts back into action. But at least the chef is stuck too and he can make food."

Winter safety expert Erich Schwarzler from the Austrian province of Vorarlberg said: "We are on high alert, we have army helicopters and avalanche teams on 24 hour standby.

The avalanche risk in Tirol is already on the second highest risk level 4 and is expected to rise over the next 24 hours possibly to the highest risk level 5.

There has been a high number of avalanche deaths over the past few days in Austria and many others injured. Earlier this week a group of four ski guides from Vorarlberg, Austria, were buried beneath a mound of snow  whilst skiing in Graubunden, Switzerland and two of them died as a result.

Meanwhile Tirol rescuers reported yesterday (Thurs) they were attending an emergency call out nearly once a minute between 17.00 and 18.00 in the Austrian Alps due to the severe weather conditions. Police in Tirol confirmed thousands of households have been left without power as a result of the weather conditions.

Many roads have been blocked and passes are completely impassable in popular ski areas such as Lech, Zurs and Warth. Poeple have had to be rescued form cars including four people who were rescued from their snow covered car in Upper Austria last night (Thurs).

Rescuers expect a busy weekend.  Anton Mattle, mayor of Galtuer and Paznaun in the Tirol has assures the region "is ready to cope with the conditions"

"In the worst case scenario we are ready to evacuate people living in affected areas. We have rescuers and helicopters on standby if the conditions deteriorate to dangerous levels in affected areas."

Boarder barely harmed in 40-metre fall

A 21-year-old boarder sustained nothing but a few bruises as he plunged down a 40-metre embankment.
Christian Egger and his Finnish girlfriend decided to leave prepared slopes to go snowboarding in deep snow at the Stubai glacier on Saturday. The different layers of snow moved and Egger fell around 40 metres after he stopped at the edge of a cliff to walk back up the hill.

"Leaving prepared pistes was a foolish thing to do. I’m lucky and I learned my lesson," the Austrian said today (Mon).
Only last Wednesday, two skiers got away with slight injuries after plunging down a 15-metre ravine in the Krippenstein mountain range in Upper Austria. The men, aged 30 and 31, sustained bruises and head injuries in the incident.

Night-time skier hits tree

A Lower Austrian man suffered serious head injuries in a ski accident yesterday evening (Weds).
The 35-year-old from Wiener Neustadt hit a tree after coming off a slope in the Semmering winter sport resort during a night-time skiing session.

Another man, who witnessed the incident as he skied down on the same piste, called mountain rescuers who rescued the unconscious skier. The man – who was wearing a crash helmet – is currently recovering in a hospital in his hometown.
The accident happened exactly one week after an 11-year-old boy from the Czech Republic came off the track and crashed against a tree during a skiing competition in Hochficht, Upper Austria.

Night-time sledging puts woman in Hospital

A 33-year-old woman sustained serious head injuries when she crashed against a tree during a night-time sledging session.
The woman was sharing the sledge with a female friend, 28, who only suffered minor injuries in the incident which occurred at the Semmering Mountain in Lower Austria’s Neunkirchen district on Friday night. The severely injured woman was hospitalised in Neunkirchen.

The accident happened only days after a young girl suffered massive head injuries in a freak sledging accident in Frankenfels near St. Pölten.
The four-year-old child crashed against a truck driving along a road on the bottom of a hill she sledged down. The kid was dragged along by the truck for around 20 metres before its driver eventually realised what happened. She is recovering at a clinic in St. Pölten

Ski areas and lifts open in Austria

The weekend just past, saw the opening of most ski areas...much to the happiness of avid skiers and children alike!

.............And a survey has reported that Austria is way ahead of Switzerland in the popularity charts!

Schladming 'best ski resort in the Alps'

The Austrian winter sport resort of Schladming has been named the best in the Alps!

Schladming in Styria topped the poll conducted among 18,000 holidaymakers by tourism marketing and consulting agency
Mountain Management.

The Swiss company said Lech-Zürs in the western Austrian province of Vorarlberg came second ahead of Switzerland’s Aletsch Arena.

Forty different resorts were rated for staff friendliness, slopes quality and their "fun factor" among other criteria. This result comes on the heels of a survey identifying Schladming’s Planai piste as the best in Europe.

Germany’s leading motorists association ADAC said its testers found the slope and the Fellhorn slope in Oberstdorf, Germany, as the best in the Alps.
ADAC explained they asked ski instructors to examine 20 of the continent’s most popular resorts for their safety conditions, standard of piste preparation and accessibility. The Planai and Fellhorn slopes were the only ones awarded the top grade!

Schladming, which is located an hour’s drive from Salzburg Airport, managed to sign American pop singer' Kesha' and rock band 'One Republic' to perform at its season opening party this Saturday (4 December).

Meanwhile, a consumer information magazine has revealed that many Austrian ski resorts increased lift pass prices by over 10 per cent during the past four years.
Konsument reports rates at most checked resorts rose twice as much as the inflation rate between the 2006/2007 season and the current winter period.
The magazine explained that the consumer price index – which considers certain aspects of people’s lives in relation to the inflation rate – increased by 7.5 per cent during the past four years, while lift tickets prices climbed by 10 per cent or more in the vast majority of resorts at the same time.

Austria has been one of the most important winter sport holiday destinations for decades. Around 56.1 million overnight stays were recorded in the country between November 2009 and last March, up by 1.3 per cent year on year.

First snow hits Austria

Dozens of cars got stuck on snow-covered Alpine roads across Austria last night (Sun/Mon).

Motorists must now equip their vehicles with snow chains on several pass roads in
Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Salzburg and Styria as the snow line dropped to 1,000 metres altitude on the weekend.

Car clubs ÖAMTC and Arbö warned of hazardous driving conditions on icy roads for example the B99
Katschberg road bordering Salzburg and Carinthia.

Tyrol’s B186 Timmelsjoch road and the L704 Sölk pass in Styria had to be closed to
traffic due to dozens of centimetres of freshly fallen snow.

Meteorologists announced today that valleys across the Austrian Alps must brace
themselves for the first snowfalls on Wednesday when the snow line will
reach an altitude of 500 metres.

Eastern Austria is, meanwhile, set for more rainfalls and strong winds this week.

German boy seriously injured in freak sledging crash

An eleven-year-old boy is in a critical state after a sledging accident in Vorarlberg.

Lech am Arlberg authorities said today (Thurs) the German tourist plunged down an almost vertical embankment after smashing through a safety net at a toboggan track on Tuesday evening.

Officials said the child, from Ahrensburg in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, was hospitalised with serious injuries after the six-metre fall.

More than 58,100 of the ten million people skiing, snowboarding and sledging in the Austrian Alps in the 2008/2009 winter season ended up in hospital, according to statistics provided by the Austrian Committee for Traffic Safety (KfV).

14/03/10

Lift operator in clinic after snowmobile overturns

A ski lift operator was hospitalised after crashing on a snowmobile yesterday (Thurs).

Authorities in Hirschegg, Vorarlberg, said today the man, 49, was driving the "Ski-Doo" vehicle uphill towards a lift's peak station when he failed to get further after hitting an icy spot.

The snowmobile then skidded down around 200 metres before it overturned in a hollow. Its driver was seriously injured when he was hurled off it.

Officials said he was helicoptered to a clinic in Immenstadt, Germany.

Meanwhile the Austrian Committee for Traffic Safety (KfV) is set to release skiing accident figures for the ending season shortly.

The institution said ahead of the cold season it expected around 56,000 of the nine to ten million people skiing or snowboarding on the country's slopes to end up in hospital this season.

Its statistics showed that 58,100 people had suffered injuries during the previous winter season.

Austria finish Vancouver Olympics in top ten

The Austrian Olympic team can look back with satisfaction at the Vancouver Games, with the country finishing in the top ten of winners.

Austria ranks in ninth pl;ace with four gold, six silver and six bronze medals. Austria also takes joint first place with Russia, finishing in fourth in 86 events. But the team’s biggest disappointment is the bad performance of the men’s Alpine skiing team who failed to reach the podium.

The Austrian Skiing Federation (ÖSV) invests more money than any other body into its World Cup Alpine skiing team and the infrastructure built up around it. It was the first time Austria’s male skiing team failed to win any silverware at the Olympic Games with the exception of the 1936 event when Austria’s skiers were banned for breaching the amateur state rules against working as ski instructors.

Benjamin Raich, who won gold in the 2006 Olympic slalom and giant slalom, said after finishing fourth in Saturday’s slalom, "The whole team is extremely disappointed, of course."

ÖSV president Peter Schröcksnadel claimed: "Everyone who says our system is wrecked is wrong. What are you supposed to do if so many athletes finish in fourth?"

Schröcksnadel dismissed calls coaches must be replaced. He however said he was considering a change to certain structures. It is expected that the skiing training group system will be restructured.

Skiers safe after lift mistake

Two Upper Austrian skiers were rescued on Sunday after taking the wrong lift up a mountain.

The pair found themselves on the Krippenstein, 500 metres higher than their intended destination, Krippenbrunn in Upper Austria’s Gmunden district, police said.

Despite their mistake and the late hour, they decided to ski down the mountain. After losing their way and then finding it again, they found the pads on the bottom of their skis that gave them improved traction on the snow were no longer functioning properly.

At that point, they called the mountain rescue service. Several members went to their location and gave them new pads. The rescuers then escorted them to a waiting piste grooming machine on which they rode down to the valley floor.

Call for night time skiing ban

Graz. Calls have been made for a ban on night skiing after a woman was left in a coma after an accident as she skied down a mountain in the dark. The Styrian cable-car operators’ division  called for the ban after a 45-year-old was left in a coma following an accident at the Hauser Kaibling ski area. She had been making her way down to the valley floor at 11pm after visiting a mountain hut when she skied into a cable running from a piste packing machine to a pole and was left hanging by her neck. Doctors said she would probably be handicapped for the rest of her life if she survived. Styrian cable-car operators’ division head, Peter Lackner said ' any ban would be difficult to agree on as interest of officials and restaurant owners would differ'.

Avalanche warnings for Alpine regions

Innsbruck. Authorities have issued avalanche warnings after heavy snowfalls in the Alps. Experts at the Avalanche-Warning Service said heavy snow in East Tyrol and along the Alpine divide had created a "precarious” situation in many areas. But they said they expected the situation to returns to normal over the coming days. Conditions above 2,500-metres were most dangerous with regions like the southern Ötz Valley and the Stubai Alps most at risk of avalanches. Skiers were warned of skiing down shadowy, steep slopes with large amounts of freshly-fal- len snow as it could increase the chance of sudden avalanches. Meanwhile fire brigades in the western province of Vorarlberg were called out 35 times on Monday night following the heavy snowfalls.

Winter Sports Injuries worry!

More than 50,000 people will be hospitalised in skiing accidents on Austria’s slopes this season, safety experts have predicted.

The Committee for Traffic Safety (KfV) said it expected 56,000 of the nine to 10 million people who will ski in Austria this winter season will end up in hospital.

The KfV added there had been 58,100 people severely injured during the last winter season. KfV announced every second badly-injured skier and every third seriously injured snowboarder had suffered broken bones last year, and 32 per cent of injured skiers and 17 per cent of injured snowboarders had suffered muscle or tendon injuries.

It has now become local law at most slopes in Austria for those under the age of 15 years to wear a ski helmet, but we would advise that even adults over this age should wear a helmet. You can rent them pretty cheaply at all ski resorts....so don't take a chance, stay safe, get a helmet.

Snow, Snow and more snow!

Lots of new snow has attracted last minute visitors to Austria. It has snowed each day now for the past week, leaving perfect powder on most ski resorts. There has been lots of worry about the temperatures as this is leading to a higher avalanche risk. But that said what could be better than to ski with the sun on your face all day!! And as long as you keep to the pistes, there is little danger.

It is coming close to the end of the season now, but if the snow keeps falling the chances are the ski slopes will extend the season...yiphee!!

Ski Weather and Guests!

This week, our guests are Snowboarders from London. They loved the amount of snow and the great conditions. Although we have had rain the past week..this has translated as snow on the mountains...superb powder!  Is it like this all year they asked me? No we get lots of sun in the summer and it is so hot you can swim in the lakes!!

Something that never fails to amaze me is that so many people only think of Austria as being snow covered all year? This is not so...in the summer we have temperatures has hot as the Med! Reaching as much as 36 degrees!!

Info from Wolfgangsee ski region

Ready, steady, snow…!

If you love winter sports then the Wolfgangsee is the right place for you! Whether it’s on skis or a snowboard our region has lots of attractive ski areas each being one more beautiful than the other:

The Postalm ski area is almost on Strobl’s doorstep - a great family ski area 1200-1900m above sea level that offers something for everyone, whether you are a beginner or expert skier. After great investment last year , a modern 4-seater chair-lift was built to enhance the existing 8 lifts. There is also a escalator carpet which means that beginners do not have to worry about getting that blinking toggle between their legs without falling over!! There is a good ski school and also a childrens area so they do not have to negotiate with the adults for space! All the runs lead to the valley plateau, so you can be sure the youngsters will not get lost!

The 'Zwölferhorn mountain' near St. Gilgen offers great skiing also! The peak can be comfortably reached by cable car and also offers a fantastic panoramic view of the snowy horizons around the Wolfgangsee for those who choose not to ski.

The 'Dachstein West' ski area can be reached by car or ski bus and has 140 km of sheer skiing pleasure for the whole family!

So all in all, our region is one of the most family in Austria and link that with the sports on the lake...you have almost everything you could wish for on a ski holiday.

Austria is not just a ski desitnation

Yes, we know it is famous for its Alps! But, leaving aside ski-ing for a moment, have you ever stopped to consider what is underneath all that white stuff that people skim over at great speed?

Well when the snow melts, out come the meadow flowers and the mountain slopes are turned into a glorious canvas of yellow and green stretching for as far as the eye can see. The Spring days are warm and the streams gush crystal clear water as the mountain snows rapidly melt.

Then there is summer in the mountains. No, not cold as you would think; temperatures regularly reach the high 80s so, swimming in the lakes and sunbathing are just as normal as on the Spanish costas! The cable cars are filled with walkers and groups wanting to experience the heady atmosphere of high altitude and the views that are afforded across the alpine mountain ranges.

Following behind these hot summers come the golden autumns, when the leaves on the trees turn to shades of gold and burnished copper creating picture postcard scenes. And of course, we have Winter, when the snow starts to fall and the land goes to sleep.

So then what is there to look forward to? A white christmas of course! The fantastic Christ Kindel Markets in all large towns and cities. No plastic decorations here! There is very little commercialism to be found and Christmas is spent enjoying the event and not the gaudily wrapped presents!

OK, now comes the superb ski-season with some of the best mountain pistes in the world with excellent skil areas to suit all standards. From the beautiful Voralberg in the west to the vast Sports world Amade in the central alps.

Added to all this you have the Culture and music festivals all year. Composers such as Mozart and Strauss are the best known but there are many more. So, what are you waiting for? Look inside and find out what is on offer in Austria.
